Prayer & Fasting Guide

A Guide for Prayer and Fasting

Spring, 2019

Overview

. . .when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. . . . when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. . . .when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret

Matthew 6:3, 6, 17-18

As one way of applying Jesus’ words from Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18, the following guide for prayer and fasting offers some prompts for your own prayer. You’re welcome to follow it as closely as you wish, but are equally welcome to let it only inspire your own prayers--much like a lead sheet prompts improvisation in a jazz musician. We’ll update this prayer list each week until the end of our series in the Sermon on the Mount in late June.

If you are unfamiliar with fasting for the purpose of devoting the time to prayer, you might begin your time(s) with this liturgy for fasting and prayer by Peter Brown. It outlines both the several purposes for fasting and several scripture texts which illustrate them. Then as time permits and as you are led, consider letting your prayers be for the following.
