A Battle of Wills

A Battle of Wills

Passage: Acts 21:1-14

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Acts: The Perpetual Power of the Gospel

We try in vain to fit Jesus and the Gospel into our own pre-existing kingdoms as we wage a prayerful and perpetual Battle of Wills with God. We see life from our limited and emotional point of view, which leads us to fight against his path and even accuse him of either being out of control or, even worse, unloving. God is slowly revealing that he is wise enough to know what is best, loving enough to desire what is best and powerful enough to do what is best, even if it makes no sense to us. In all of this he is revealing his perfectly beautiful re-creation while miraculously using darkness to bring out His light and glory. When we are in the heat of our Battle of Wills, we actually have an opportunity to develop faith and dependence as we honestly confess to him our fears and frustrations while pleading with him to change our faith from the inside so we can pray along with Jesus “Not my will but yours be done.”

Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Ephesians 1:3,7-10 & Psalm 95:1 ESV
ALL: 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

LEADER: 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

ALL: 1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:7-10;16-18 ESV
LEADER: 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

ALL: 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

LEADER: 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.

ALL: For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Central Text: Acts 21:1-14 ESV
And when we had parted from them and set sail, we came by a straight course to Cos, and the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara. 2 And having found a ship crossing to Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail. 3 When we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left we sailed to Syria and landed at Tyre, for there the ship was to unload its cargo. 4 And having sought out the disciples, we stayed there for seven days. And through the Spirit they were telling Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 When our days there were ended, we departed and went on our journey, and they all, with wives and children, accompanied us until we were outside the city. And kneeling down on the beach, we prayed 6 and said farewell to one another. Then we went on board the ship, and they returned home. 7 When we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and we greeted the brothers and stayed with them for one day. 8 On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. 9 He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied. 10 While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘This is how the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12 When we heard this, we and the people there urged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.”

Prayer: The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

For Thine is the Kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever Amen.

Post-Service Text: Acts 21:14 ESV
14 And since he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, “Let the will of the Lord be done.”

Related Scriptures:
Luke 22
39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Matt 16:24-26
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?

Matthew 13:44
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Matthew 13:45-46
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

 Discussion Questions

  1. What is your typical response when things aren’t “going your way”?
  2. What are your conversations with God like when your actual life is in contradiction to the plans you had for your life?
  3. What reasons do we see in the book of Acts making it “necessary” that Paul suffer? Why is it that Paul could walk straight into the storm with confidence? What did he have to believe to do this?
  4. How can that speak into the curvy paths of your life?
  5. How does it help you when you are frustrated, scared, depressed and anxious about the future or even current difficulties, to reflect on the character of God and especially how Jesus himself in the garden said “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done?

Quotes

“Bad things come untrue; Good things never taken away; Best things yet to come” - John Calvin

“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done."  - C.S. Lewis

“You know, it’s possible that God’s plan for us is littleness. His plan for us may be personal failure. It’s possible that when another door closes, it’s not because he plans to open a window but because he plans to have the building fall down on you. The question we must ask ourselves is this: Will Christ be enough?” - Jared Wilson

“I believe like a child that suffering will be healed and made up for, that all the humiliating absurdity of human contradictions will vanish like a pitiful mirage, like the despicable fabrication of the impotent and infinitely small Euclidean mind of man, that in the world's finale, at the moment of eternal harmony, something so precious will come to pass that it will suffice for all hearts, for the comforting of all resentments, for the atonement of all the crimes of humanity, for all the blood that they've shed; that it will make it not only possible to forgive but to justify all that has happened.” - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
