Spoken as One with Authority

Spoken as One with Authority

Passage: Acts 23:1-11

Speaker: Ben Seneker

Series: Acts: The Perpetual Power of the Gospel

This week’s passage finds Paul beaten, bound, and thrown into jail. It is likely that Paul, under those circumstances, was questioning whether or not he would once again be able to publicly preach the gospel of Christ. However, in the midst of these hardships, Jesus comes to Paul and tells him to “Take courage,” and that he would indeed preach the gospel message in Rome. What is striking is the authority with which Jesus speaks; that what he said was certain to happen. Does Jesus speak to us today in a similar way? Does he still speak with the same authority? And if so, how can I know if I can trust his authority?

Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Philippians 2:5-11 ESV
LEADER: 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

ALL: 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Reading: John 1:1-3;12-13 ESV
LEADER: 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
ALL: 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

Central Text: Acts 22:30-23:11 ESV
22:30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.

23:1 And looking intently at the council, Paul said, “Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day.” 2 And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. 3 Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting to judge me according to the law, and yet contrary to the law you order me to be struck?” 4 Those who stood by said, “Would you revile God's high priest?” 5 And Paul said, “I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’” 6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.” 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all. 9 Then a great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party stood up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong in this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” 10 And when the dissension became violent, the tribune, afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him away from among them by force and bring him into the barracks. 11 The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.”

Benediction:  Isaiah 43:1-3a,4a;19 ESV
ALL: 1 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

LEADER: 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

ALL: 4...you are precious in my eyes, and honoured, and I love you,

LEADER: 19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you typically respond to those in authority over you?  What are some examples of authority being used in a righteous way, versus authority being abused?  What are key differences?
  2. Why is God’s character (His perfect goodness, justice, love, etc.) so important in our trusting in His authority?  How does God’s character enable our obedience and submission to His authority?  How might this compare or contrast this with our obedience and submission to earthly rulers?
  3. How does our sinful nature corrupt our ability, and our desire to, submit to Christ’s authority?  What beauty flows out of our obedience to Christ’s authority?  Consider how Paul’s example may encourage you in your own life.
