Until the Chief Shepherd Appears

Until the Chief Shepherd Appears

Passage: 1 Peter 5:1-5

Speaker: Tony Giles

Series: Guest Speaker, Tony Giles

Jesus is the True and Good Shepherd who continues to extend his love for his bride through the vital role of under-shepherds he appoints for the flourishing of his church. Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Psalm 95:1-2;4-7 ESV
LEADER: 1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!

ALL: 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.

Prayer: The Consecrated Life (adapted from The Valley of Vision)
LEADER:  O, Gracious God, it is your great will to make known the glory of Your Son.
ALL:  Let us stand in this great gospel.
LEADER:  Center our hearts.  Renew our minds. Here is our duty.
ALL:  To know the love of Christ.  To consecrate our lives in gratitude and good works.
LEADER:  Holy Spirit work in us the grace and beauty of Christ.

Central Text:  1 Peter 5:1-5 ESV
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility towards one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Response: John 10:11 ESV
11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Benediction: Hebrews 13:20-21 ESV
LEADER; 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,

ALL: 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Hebrews 13:17-20 ESV
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. 18 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honourably in all things. 19 I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. 20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,
