The Waters We Drink

The Waters We Drink

Passage: John 4:5-15

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: General Topic

Keywords: water, fulfillment, satisfaction, thirst

Our nagging, broken and barren hearts wake us up each morning and send us all on a perpetual quest for satisfaction, joy, fulfillment and completion. As we bounce around from thing to thing and person to person in an attempt to achieve this wholeness, even if only temporarily, Jesus offers us himself, the Spring of Living Water, that will not only perpetually flow life itself into our whole being, but flow from us to others and to the whole as we become agents of Gospel Satisfaction to those around us.

Readings & Scripture

PRE SERVICE TEXT: John 4:13-14
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

PREPARATION/CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 42:1-5
ALL: As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God,
    for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my food
    day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”

4 These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
    a multitude keeping festival.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation.

CENTRAL TEXT: John 4:5-15; John 7:37-39

So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”...

John 7:37-39
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

OT READING: Isaiah 49:8-10

LEADER: Thus says the Lord“In a time of favor I have answered you; in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages,

9 saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’ They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture;

10  they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them.

LEADER: The word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.
